The work of Spanish artist Enrique Marty (b. 1969, Salamanca, Spain) takes the viewer on an audio-visual trip through the absurdity of human existence and the way in which we ourselves deal with it. Using a wide range of artistic devices, ranging from hyperrealistic puppet-like statues, sculptures, paintings, collages and animated films, Enrique Marty mostly depicts himself, his friends/family as well as figures from history and Greek mythology as tragicomic, symbolic extras in a grotesque epic.

‘Children Parents’ depicts two ageing figures, more specific the artist’s parents. The work is based on molds of Marty’s parents and makes use of their real hair. The physiognomic similarities between the puppet-like statues and the artist’s parents are striking. Enrique Marty uses the figures of his father and his mother as a symbol for everyone’s parents, something that immediately connects to and recalls the viewer’s own thoughts and memories.

‘Children Parents’ can be read as a reflection on the phenomenon of grownups taking on the characteristics of children as they age. The faces of both puppet-like statues are hybrids, composites of the face of the artist’s parents in 2009 (when the work has been made) and their facial features as a baby/child. The clothes of the figures are based on the clothes of teenagers. Enrique Marty took inspiration from the representation of Jesus as a baby/child, who throughout art history is portrayed with adult features, often both physically (in extreme cases sometimes even with facial hair) and in terms of personality (the dignity, knowledge and wisdom of an adult).
